“I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” might sound like an odd rallying cry for a Republican governor, but don’t tell that to South Carolina’s Nikki Haley. Yesterday, the governor posted pictures of herself hanging out with Joan Jett, the legendary rock guitarist who happens to be one of Haley’s idols.

“I have always said there are 3 people I would love to sit down with: Margaret Thatcher, Gov. Carroll Campbell, and Joan Jett,” wrote Haley in a Facebook post on May 19. She was able to make one of those wishes come true in New York on Monday afternoon when she and her husband, Michael, sat down to lunch at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel with Jett and her producer Kenny Laguna. Haley was in town for a Republican Governors Association meeting at the tony East Side hotel.

“Strength, talent, passion, and courage…it doesn’t get any cooler than her,” continued Haley, who told Marie Claire magazine in 2012 that Jett’s music provides the sound track to official South Carolina business. “When we have bill signings, we’ve got music playing. I have a great love for Joan Jett. When I am going through the toughest times, I’ll blast her music.”
