10-year-old ‘Duck Dynasty’ star Mia Robertson holds her own on the Hill

Celebs: Members of A&E’s reigning reality show, “Duck Dynasty.” “Duck Commander,” Jase Robertson, chief operating officer of the duck hunting empire, his wife, Missy, sons Reed and Cole and daughter, Mia.

Cause: The Mia Moo Foundation, which raises awareness and funds for cleft palate and cleft lip research. In 2014 the Robertson’s 10-year-old daughter, who was born with a cleft lip and palate, completed her fifth and final surgery to correct it.

Scene: With the Capitol dome as a backdrop and the temperatures soaring, Mia stepped to the podium Tuesday evening to tell her story. Dressed like a typical 10-year-old, in ruffle-hemmed red shorts and a short-sleeve top with just a hint of peplum, she carefully unfolded the printed sheet of paper to recite a speech she wrote.

Unfortunately the sound system wasn’t quite up to the task, and it was nearly impossible to hear the fourth-grader as she spoke in front of a crowd of about 50 — clicking cameramen, journalists, Hill staffers and a smattering of “Duck Dynasty” fans. A few sentences, though, got through. “When I think about my cleft, sometimes I feel like people laugh at me,” read Mia. “But I think like my dad did when he got kicked out of the Trump Hotel, I just need to laugh it off.” And, “My family is awesome.”

Later Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), who was also born with a cleft lip and palate, presented Mia with a framed certification of recognition and said, “It’s our imperfection that makes us lovable.”

Soundbite: “I believe god has blessed kids like Mia with an extra measure of courage,” said Jase Robertson.
