Obama was nominated for the challenge by Ethel Kennedy, who in a short video posted on her grandson’s Facebook page welcomed the President to Cape Cod with the challenge of dumping a bucket of ice water on his head to raise awareness of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The social media trend quickly caught on after friends and relatives of former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates started dumping ice-cold buckets of water on their heads to raise awareness for the degenerative disease, which Frates was diagnosed with in 2012. Other celebrities have completed the ice bucket challenge, including Martha Stewart and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.
