Jay Leno’s famous friends and colleagues have plenty of nice things to say about his comedic skills, his mastery of the monologue, and his work ethic. But what about the longtime “Tonight Show” host’s sartorial sense?

When he’s not onstage or on camera, where he often wears conservative suits and ties, Leno almost always sports a signature ensemble of jeans and a denim button-down shirt. Oft-derided as a “Canadian tuxedo,” the bluesy look is bold — and it isn’t a huge hit with at least one of his pals. “It’s horrible,” Jerry Seinfeld said. “I’m a big fan of looking decent. You don’t have to look great — but I think decent.”

Not all of the comedians who turned out to honor Leno on Sunday night at the Kennedy Center, including Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, J.B. Smoove, Kristin Chenoweth, and Ross Mathews, were quite as harsh. Watch their take on his iconic look:
