After struggling to conceive, Iraq War veteran and double amputee Rep. Tammy Duckworth welcomed her first child, Abigail O’kalani Bowlsbey, on Tuesday.

“We are grateful for the love and support of our family and friends. We also appreciate the respect for our privacy during this important moment in our lives,” announced Duckworth (D-Ill.) and her husband, Bryan W. Bowlsbey, a major in the Army National Guard, in a joint statement released Thursday.

The couple did provide one interesting detail about baby Abigail. Her middle name, O’kalani, was chosen by former Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), who acted as the family’s “elder” by bestowing a traditional Hawaiian name. Duckworth, who was born in Thailand, moved with her family to Hawaii when she was a teenager.

The 46-year-old congresswoman announced her pregnancy on Labor Day, saying then that her daughter would be due in December.
