Celeb: Rosario Dawson, known for her portrayal of the character Mimi in the 2005 film version of the musical “Rent.”

Candidate: The New York-born actress/singer is set to headline a Bernie Sanders town hall in the South Bronx on Thursday, as part of his “Future To Believe In” rally tour. Grammy winner Residente will also be joining Dawson for the event.

Money quote: “We don’t need incremental change, we need bold leadership, and that is what Bernie Sanders brings to the conversation,” Dawson said while opening for Sanders at a March 23 San Diego rally. “This is about us. It’s not just about a party. This isn’t the GOP vs. the DNC. This is about the 99 percent that is too big to fail against the one percent.”

Does it matter?: Dawson is one of Sanders’ more prominent supporters. Although Hollywood tends to be left-leaning, the majority of high-profile celebs from the likes of Katy Perry to George Clooney have expressed loyalty for Hillary Clinton.

The child of a Puerto Rican/Afro-Cuban singer and a construction-worker stepfather living in a formerly abandoned home on the Lower East Side, Dawson, with her humble roots, is a voice for the underprivileged. Her praise for Sanders could therefore help him gain the support of minority voters — a demographic Clinton has seen more success securing thus far.
