Candidate: In October, Winfrey said she didn’t “see a role” for herself in the 2016 election cycle. That declaration probably disappointed Hillary Clinton, now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. Since then Winfrey has largely steered clear of the political arena despite Donald Trump’s assertion that she would make a great running mate for him.
Money quote: “Regardless of your politics, it’s a seminal moment for women. What this says is, there is no ceiling, that ceiling just went boom! It says anything is possible when you can be leader of the free world,” Winfrey told Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday while promoting her cable network’s new soap “Greenleaf.” She then added, “I’m with her,” echoing the Clinton campaign’s tag line.
Does it matter? Um, yes. There have been academic studies, polls, endless debates and an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to the effect that Winfrey’s early endorsement (and fundraising) had on Barack Obama’s “long shot” campaign in 2008. The former talk show queen threw her entire Q score behind Obama, hosting star-studded events in California and Chicago that not only raised dollars but also the public profile of the-then relatively unknown politician.
