Quiet. Hush-hush. Low-key. Private. These are just some of the adjectives that a celebrity hopes would share a headline with news of their high-profile divorce.
Somehow, Mika Brzezinski, the instantly recognizable co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” managed to pull that off, sliding her split from broadcast journalist Jim Hoffer under the radar.
That’s a spectacular feat in today’s tabloid culture: Ending a marriage after 23 years without TMZ finding out until after the dust and the disagreements have settled.
“Mika’s divorce was finalized in the past year. She’s really grateful that it was done amicably and in private,” said an MSNBC rep in a statement to Page Six, which broke the news Wednesday. “This has, of course, been a painful time for her family. So right now she is focused on her two teenage daughters, and on continuing to heal.”
Although the divorce, which according to Page Six was recently settled, hasn’t stirred up controversy on its own, adding fuel to the flames is Brzezinski’s relationship with co-host Joe Scarborough. Rumors that the two — now both divorcees — have been dating and will soon go public weren’t aided by the fact that they joked about them during Thursday morning’s show.
“By the way – there are a lot of lead stories today,” Scarborough said to Brzezinski who’d asked if she’d get the lead stories now (presumably since the two were now allegedly an item).
“I will finish your sentence and start with politics,” replied Brzezinski, who according to Page Six finishes Scarborough’s sentences — Exhibit A of their alleged relationship. Or perhaps a tongue-in-cheek nod to the ridiculousness of it all.
For their part, neither host has made a public statement about their relationship outside of 30 Rock, which as far as their viewers know, is nothing but professional.
