Sen. Ted Cruz is getting in touch with his inner activist. The Texas Republican called for a boycott of the shoes, shirts and jerseys promoted by athletes who protest during the national anthem, a trend started last month when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” to call attention to racial inequality.

Other pro athletes have since used the anthem to make similar statements, though their exact intent is unclear: Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters raised his fist, and several Miami Dolphins players knelt during the anthem at games this Sunday.
