Malia Obama’s gap year is truly taking shape.
Starting next month, the 18-year-old daughter of President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama who graduated from Sidwell Friends School in May but won’t attend Harvard University until the fall of 2017, will intern for Hollywood heavyweight Harvey Weinstein in the super-producer’s New York office.
After the inauguration activities Jan. 20, the Obama family will head to Palm Springs, Calif., for a vacation, after which Malia will get to work, according to the Hollywood Reporter. During past school breaks, Malia, who has a noted interest in film (and whose parents’ first date was captured in the indie flick “Southside With You“), has interned for the Halle Berry CBS series “Extant” and Lena Dunham’s HBO comedy “Girls.”
Since the East Wing announced Malia’s plans to take a gap year, an increasingly popular year off between high school and college, the Obamas’ oldest daughter has maintained something of a low profile. Except of course for that carefree cameo at Lollapalooza in August.
But Obama watchers knew it wouldn’t be long until the 18-year-old got to work (remember little sister Sasha, 15, had to skip her dad’s farewell speech because of a test the next day). Recently, the New York Times reported Malia’s secret trip to Bolivia in November, where the teenager spent more than a month and a half trekking through Bolivia and living with a local family.
Her time working for Weinstein will no doubt be a tad more glamorous, although she’s no stranger to making coffee runs like every other intern.
The choice of the Weinstein Co. may not have been mere happenstance. Remember when Michelle Obama closed out the 2013 Oscars by presenting the Best Picture award from the White House? That appearance had Weinstein, a major Obama donor, written all over it.
There’s no word yet on which part of the film company Malia will work in, but the Hollywood Reporter is leaning toward the marketing department. The Weinstein Co. did not respond to a request for comment.
