Muriel Bowser’s talents go beyond politics — on Monday night, the Washington mayor showed she can also mix up a mean cocktail.

Developers Jim and Mai Abdo threw a party to celebrate the opening of their new Foggy Bottom micro-hotel, Hotel Hive, and a neighboring new location of &pizza. The menu included lots of lemon drops, the mayor’s cocktail of choice.

After the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, Bowser jumped behind the bar to whip up her own batch. Bowser’s stint behind the bar wasn’t just a chance to show off her mixology skills — it was an opportunity to play cheerleader for Washington’s small businesses (the cocktails featured District-made Civic Vodka and Don Ciccio & Figli limoncello).

And it was a thank you to &pizza. The D.C.-based pizzeria helped push Bowser’s fair-wage bill, which raised the District’s minimum wage to $15 an hour in 2016.

The Abdos enlisted the CEO and co-founder of &pizza, Michael Lastoria, to do the food and drinks for their hotel bar, in addition to the &pizza next door. True to his pizza chain’s mission of using local vendors, Lastoria stocked the bar with spirits exclusively from the DMV.

His D.C.-pride boast? “I think it’s the only bar in the city where you can only get locally curated spirits and beer.”
