Engaged: Meghan McCain, the conservative commentator and newest co-host of ABC’s “The View,” and Ben Domenech, a conservative writer and co-founder of online magazine the Federalist.

McCain, the daughter of elder statesmen Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) first confirmed the news to People Magazine on Thursday. “Yes I am. For a long time now,” she told the magazine in a brief statement that left much to the imagination.

Later on Thursday morning the former blogger and author elaborated on her daytime gabfest after moderator Whoopi Goldberg asked leadingly, “So what’s new with you?”

“Okay so you may have read something about me on the Internet last night,” McCain began. “I am engaged and we’ve been together for years and we have been engaged for a while.”

McCain said that the couple were trying to keep their betrothal a secret, perhaps even tying the knot without anyone finding out. But come on, that’s near impossible when your dad’s John McCain and you’ve been a public figure in your own right for more than a decade.

The couple decided to get married, explained McCain, while at the hospital with her father, who is currently battling brain cancer.

“We decided to sort of celebrate life,” she said, adding, “It’s not the most romantic story, but he is my partner.”

Before returning to the day’s hot topics, McCain, who said she didn’t consider her engagement an “achievement,”  had a message for all the single ladies out there in TV land.

“Wait for people who love strong women. The men who love strong independent women, they’re out there. Don’t settle for anything else.”
