D.C. United falls in preseason opener

D.C. United dropped a 1-0 decision to the Columbus Crew in its preseason opener Saturday, conceding a penalty kick midway through the second half at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. United will end the first stage of training camp Friday against face Swedish club Malmo.

First-half lineup: Dykstra; Russell, McDonald, Woolard, Korb; DeLeon, Kitchen, Saragosa, Thorrington, Richter*; Pajoy.

Second-half lineup: VanOekel*; Omphroy*, White, Altman*, Kemp (Rozeboom 76th); Raynr, Nane*, Shanosky, Markovic*; Townsend (Seaton 76th), Rafael.


Not available: Hamid (U.S. national team), De Rosario (Canada), Jakovic (Canada), Najar (Anderlecht loan), Augusto (visa), Alam (visa).

Injury recovery: Pontius (groin), Willis (foot), Neal (calf).

Jakovic played 90 minutes and De Rosario 62 in Canada’s 4-0 loss to Denmark in Tucson. The Canadians will play the United States on Tuesday in Houston.
