On the bright side…..
Nick DeLeon returned from 6 1/2-week layoff.
Short concession lines.
Thierry Henry did not do this to United.
Managing partner Jason Levien‘s other team, Memphis Grizzlies, is even with top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in NBA playoffs.
Will Bruin didn’t record a hat trick.
United’s 15 corner kicks.
The rain stopped.
With Caps and Nats on TV and small gathering at RFK, hardly anyone witnessed United’s debacle.
United could still finish with 79 points.
On the dim side…..
Worst home loss since 4-0 to Red Bulls in April 2011.
Four straight home losses.
No victories in 60 days.
Houston scored as many goals in 72 minutes as United in 810 all season.
At 1-7-1, 2nd-worst start ever (1-8-0 in 2010).
Dynamo needed just six shots on target.
Since playoff-clinching victory over Columbus last fall, United is 2-8-4.
Smallest announced crowd in four years — and, without counting by hand, appeared to be no more than 5,000 souls.
Nine goals conceded in first 30 minutes of matches and five in last 15. (Just three between 31st and 75th.)
Next game is on road (where United hasn’t scored this season) against FC Dallas (MLS’s points leader) in Frisco (where United is 0-2-2 in last four visits).
My match report is full of strong comments from the United crew, including Ben Olsen answering a question about his job status.
Bonus Ben quote:
“We are just giving teams goals. All of these teams aren’t earning goals. They’re saying, ‘Sit back, counter on D.C. and they will make mistakes.’ And we have consistently done that. Once that happens, the game becomes an exercise in us trying to get one back and pushing and pushing, and ultimately if you don’t get it, it’s probably going to come back the other way because you are taking chances. It’s not a good recipe right now.”
Bonus DeRo quote:
“I have been doing a lot of screaming and a lot of yelling, and you see it’s the same thing. I don’t know. Guys have to look in the mirror and take a gut check because this is our life. We have got to play with that passion and I just don’t see that consistently from everyone. … It’s the response that bothers me. The head goes down and you dig a deeper hole for yourself. That part is unacceptable.”
