Tiffany McCarty scored the tiebreaking goal in the 56th minute Thursday night as the visiting Washington Spirit defeated the Seattle Reign, 4-2, for to its first victory of the inaugural National Women’s Soccer League season.

Tori Huster added a goal in the 84th for the Spirit (1-2-3), which scored multiple goals for the first time.

The Reign (0-5-1) went ahead in the sixth minute on Lindsey Taylor‘s goal, but Diana Matheson and Ali Krieger scored in the 35th and 40th respectively in front of just 1,011 spectators at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash. Matheson stung an angled eight-yarder for her fourth goal of the year and Krieger headed in a rebound after Reign goalkeeper Michelle Betos made consecutive superb saves.

Seattle equalized less than two minutes into the second half on Teresa Noyola‘s header, but the Spirit regained the lead when Matheson set up McCarthy, who beat two defenders and scored from 12 yards for her second goal of the season. Huster’s goal came on a six-yard header off captain Lori Lindsey‘s free kick.

Meantime in Portland, more than 11,000 watched Sky Blue FC surprise the Thorns, 1-0, to forge a first-place tie with 4-1-1 records.
