United, though, does not have a great track record identifying players abroad. Just in the past two weeks, the club dropped two foreigners who arrived with promise. Since 2004, a span of 10 seasons, 33 imports without U.S. pro ties have landed in Washington. Expectations varied, from the high-profile signing of Marcelo Gallardo to low-key, late-season additions (remember Lucio Filomeno?) for the purpose of strengthening depth.

Of those 33 players, 20 lasted one season or less. Four others signed in the midst of one season and were retained over the winter but did not last the entire subsequent campaign.
