(D.C. United) (D.C. United)

Round 2 of the Payne Cup commences this evening at RFK Stadium as D.C. United hosts Toronto FC at 7 p.m. Kevin Payne, former DCU chief and current TFC boss, is in the house.

TFC won the first leg, in Washington in June. The sides will meet again in Ontario in five weeks — United’s final tune-up before the only meaningful match of the fall: the U.S. Open Cup final at Real Salt Lake three days later.

Tonight’s game will not appear on local TV (Direct Kick and MLS Live only). The September meeting between the clubs, however, has been picked up by Monumental Network, Washington sports executive Ted Leonsis‘ online outlet. United and Monumental announced the deal Friday. Monumental began its soccer foray this summer with the launch of a weekly show. (Here is this week’s edition.)

The platform will pull the feed from Toronto’s production and utilize D.C.-based announcers for the live stream. It’s an experiment of sorts: Monumental is not expected to add any other matches this season and Comcast SportsNet holds the primary rights through the 2015-16 season. If Monumental’s broadcast next month turns out well, perhaps the outlet will invest in non-CSN matches in future years.
