The D.C. United-Chivas USA match was everything you would expect involving last-place clubs. Which is to say, not much.

Chivas won, 1-0, in front of a sparse crowd at StubHub Center on Sunday night.

Erick Torres scored early in the second half for his seventh goal in nine matches since arriving on loan from the parent club in Guadalajara. Dan Kennedy made three quality saves but was under light duress most of the evening. At the other end, Bill Hamid made two terrific stops.

United (3-19-5) was blanked on the road for the 10th time in 14 outings (0-11-3) and will return home to face the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday afternoon at RFK Stadium. Chivas improved to 6-15-7.

Ben Olsen‘s starting lineup averaged 23.6 years old and included seven players age 23 or under. Collin Martin, an 18-year-old midfielder from Chevy Chase, Md., made his second start. Dwayne De Rosario, Dejan Jakovic and Kyle Porter were in Spain for Canada’s 0-0 draw against Mauritania.

United’s Chris Pontius did return from an eight-game injury absence, an encouraging sign looking ahead to the U.S. Open Cup final Oct. 1 at Real Salt Lake. Pontius had a chance to equalize in stoppage time but failed to make contact from eight yards.

DCU lineup: Hamid; Korb, White (Nyassi 82nd), Woolard (Shanosky 31st), Iapichino; DeLeon, Kitchen, Neal, Martin (Pontius 65th), Silva; Doyle.
