Wednesday kickaround

● While the D.C. Council begins questioning the mayor’s stadium plan with D.C. United — and suggesting exploring the possibility of revamping RFK Stadium —  the city and developer agree on ground rules for the complicated land swap involving Buzzard Point.

● As you know by now, GolTV has exclusive rights to the U.S. Open Cup final between United and Real Salt Lake next Tuesday at Rio Tinto Stadium. The outlet declined to provide a live stream or allow the tournament organizer, the U.S. Soccer Federation, to produce one of its own. With GolTV’s limited availability on cable and satellite systems, United has arranged several public viewing locations in the area.

Lucky Bar near Dupont Circle will host the official viewing party. Others planning to show the match:

Fado, Washington

The Pug, Washington

Tunnicliff’s Tavern, Washington

The Queen Vic, Washington

Ventnor Sports Cafe, Washington

Gus’ Bar and Grill, Richmond

● German-American defender John Brooks will miss two to three weeks with an arm injury suffered with Hertha Berlin last weekend, jeopardizing hopes of him making his debut in official competition with the U.S. national team. He has yet to play in a World Cup qualifier, leaving open the possibility of switching allegiance to Germany. Both he and U.S. officials say, however, they are committed to one another. The Americans will play their final qualifiers Oct. 11 and 15 against Jamaica and Panama, respectively. Juergen Klinsmann is not expected to announce his roster until after the Oct. 5-6 league matches.

● The Washington Spirit is not planning to sign any international players until the NWSL’s allocation process is completed this fall, owner Bill Lynch said.

Several U.S. and Canadian national team players are expected to join the league, he said. After finishing last in the inaugural season, the Spirit will have high priority in claiming new allocation-eligible players, although those players will have some say in where they end up.

Meantime, Washington has targeted multiple foreign players, presumably European, for acquisition. Lynch declined to identify them.

German forward Conny Pohlers, who joined the club mid-season on loan from Wolfsburg, probably will not return, Lynch said. He does expect the other regulars to rejoin the team next season.

Earlier this month, the Spirit claimed defender Nikki Marshall on waivers from the NWSL champion Portland Thorns. She started every match during the regular season and playoffs. Washington also waived forward Lindsay Taylor and midfielder Holly King.
