*In his return from a knee injury, American forward Herculez Gomez recorded a hat trick in just 25 minutes of the second half during Tijuana’s 6-0 victory over Victoria (Honduras) in the CONCACAF Champions League. American forward Paul Arriola, 18, also scored for the Xolos, who secured passage to the knockout stage. Compatriots Greg Garza (90) and Joe Corona (45) started for Tijuana.


*A day earlier, American forward Aron Johannsson scored three goals for AZ Alkmaar in a 4-1 extra-time victory over Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch Cup.

*Junior Flores, the Northern Virginia teenager who has committed to Borussia Dortmund, turned down an invitation to the U.S. under-18 national team training camp in California because of commitments with the Bundesliga club next month. Flores cannot officially join Dortmund until he turns 18 in March but has had several informal sessions with the team this year.

*The University of Virginia women’s team, ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time in 23 years, rebounded from a two-goal deficit in the second half to win at Duke, 3-2, and improve to 10-0-0 (4-0-0 in the ACC). [Video here] On Sunday, the Cavaliers will host Maryland, which lost at third-ranked Notre Dame, 5-0. Meantime, No. 10 Georgetown (8-0-2) remained unbeaten with a 1-1 home draw against DePaul.
