D.C. United sets 2014 MLS schedule

(D.C. United) (D.C. United)

D.C. United will open the 2014 MLS season March 8 against the Columbus Crew at RFK Stadium, the league announced Monday.

The campaign runs through Oct. 25, with each of the 19 clubs again playing 34 matches. MLS will take a two-week break in June during the group stages of the month-long World Cup in Brazil.

Coming off the worst season in club history, United will face Eastern Conference champion Sporting Kansas City three times (at home in May and October, away in August) and Western champion Real Salt Lake on the road in August.

United and archrival New York will meet in April and August at RFK and in September at Red Bull Arena.

NBC Sports Network will carry six DCU matches and ESPN2 one. The local TV package won’t be finalized for several months.

United will open training camp in late January in Washington before moving operations to Bradenton, Fla., and, in the final stretch of preseason, Charleston, S.C.

Teams will again play opponents from the other conference once. United’s Western foes at home are Dallas, Seattle, Chivas and Colorado. On the road, DCU will visit Los Angeles, Real Salt Lake, Portland, San Jose and Vancouver.
