D.C. United tops Houston Dynamo, 2-0

D.C. United earned its first preseason victory Saturday, defeating the Houston Dynamo 2-0 on the opening night of the Carolina Challenge Cup in Charleston, S.C.

Two weeks ahead of the MLS season opener, United went ahead in the 21st minute when Houston’s David Horst headed Nick DeLeon‘s cross into his own net. Michael Seaton, United’s 17-year-old homegrown forward from Capitol Heights, added to the lead in the 88th minute when he pounced on a rebound at the top of the penalty area after Kyle Porter‘s bid was blocked.

United did not score in three losses during the middle stage of training camp in Bradenton, Fla.

First-choice goalkeeper Bill Hamid played all 90 minutes and, despite misjudging a ball sent into the box late in the match, recorded the shutout.

United will face the third-division Charleston Battery on Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium before closing preseason play next Saturday against the Seattle Sounders.

The opener is March 8 against the Columbus Crew at RFK Stadium.
