D.C. United announced Monday that Leidos, a government contracting titan based in Reston and formerly known as SAIC, will serve as the MLS club’s primary sponsor, a deal that includes the company’s logo on the jersey.

Terms were not disclosed. However, Leidos said the pact will run three to five years and sources close to the situation said it’s financially comparable to United’s contract with Volkswagen, which expired in December. The German automaker paid United $2.8 million for the first five years of the agreement and an undisclosed lower amount last season.

United’s agreement with Leidos (pronounced LIE-dos) was first reported by the Insider last week.

“We are extremely excited for the opportunity to partner with such an innovative company that recognizes the value of our sport and our brand, both here and around the world,” United managing partner Jason Levien said in a written statement.

“Soccer is a growing, global sport and we are a growing company with our eyes on the future,” Leidos chief executive John Jumper said in a written statement. “This sponsorship will help enable us to get exposure not only locally, but throughout the country and internationally.”

Leidos is a national security, health and engineering solutions company with more than 6,000 employees in the Washington area. It did an estimated $6 billion in the most recent fiscal year.

Aside from the jersey, the Leidos logo will appear throughout RFK Stadium and all of the team’s marketing and media properties.

The jersey with the new logo will go on sale at United’s team store at RFK Stadium on March 8, opening day against the Columbus Crew. Fans who had previously purchased the logo-free jersey this month can have the Leidos seal added free of charge at the team store.

United’s deal with Leidos is unrelated to discussions concerning naming rights of the proposed stadium at Buzzard Point.
