We begin the day on a sad note, the death of Shawn Kuykendall, who has lost his battle with cancer at age 32. From a family with deep soccer roots in the Washington area, Kuykendall starred at Madison High School in Virginia and American University before playing one year for D.C. United and one for the New York Red Bulls.

Post colleague Rick Maese, who chronicled Kuykendall’s journey in this extraordinary story last fall, wrote about his life and death this morning.

Kuykendall’s longtime friend, Mike Foss of USA Today, posted this touching piece.

RIP, Shawn. The soccer community — and our community as a whole — will miss you.
