The Brazilians are the strong favorites to emerge on top of Group A, which includes Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon.

Team USA, on the other hand, finds itself with a formidible challenge in Group G as it has to play Germany, Portugal and Ghana. Some have deemed it the toughest group in the entire draw (a.k.a. the Group of Death).

Count Washington Post soccer reporter Steve Goff as one of them.

“It’s definitely the Group of Death,” Goff said on The John Feinstein Show. “Germany is a championship contender, no doubt. Portugal is a high-quality team (that) happens to have the best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo. Ghana, if you go by FIFA’s silly rankings, they’re not considered a top team in the world, but they’re probably the best team in Africa, they’ve knocked the U.S. out of the last two World Cups and they’re full of players who are based in Europe.”

The U.S. will open against Ghana on Monday, June 16.
