U.S. national team scheduled to play at Ireland this fall

The U.S. national team will play a friendly at Ireland on Nov. 18, Irish media outlets reported today.

U.S. Soccer Federation officials did not initially respond to requests for confirmation, although the USSF typically does not comment on potential friendlies until paperwork is finalized.

The match date falls in a FIFA fixture window, which would allow Jurgen Klinsmann to gain the release of players of his choosing. However, he would likely refrain from requesting players active in the late stages of the MLS playoffs.

The United States has already announced one post-World Cup friendly — Sept. 3 against the Czech Republic in Prague — and will probably set an October date, as well.

FIFA has scheduled three official windows this fall: Sept. 1-9, Oct. 6-14 and Nov. 10-18. Teams are permitted to play up to two matches in each of those time periods (six overall).

European Championship qualifiers are scheduled for a portion of each window. Ireland, for example, will play the United States four days after visiting Scotland. The Czech Republic is using the U.S. team’s visit as preparation for a qualifier against the Netherlands six days later.

The United States and Ireland have not played one another since 2002, a 2-1 Irish victory in Dublin.
