D.C. United defenders Bobby Boswell and Sean Franklin have been added to the MLS all-star team, which will face Bundesliga titan Bayern Munich on Wednesday in Portland, Ore.

Boswell, a center back in his second stint in Washington after six years in Houston, replaces Seattle’s Chad Marshall (back spasms). Franklin, in his first year with United, steps in for Los Angeles’ Omar Gonzalez.

In another move, Philadelphia’s Maurice Edu replaces Los Angeles’ Robbie Keane. The Galaxy sought roster relief because it has a league game Friday.

“Given the limited minutes that Omar and Robbie would need to play due to having a game on Friday and the injury to Chad, I felt we needed to bring in Sean, Bobby and Maurice to provide us with more cover in the back,” all-star coach Caleb Porter of Portland said. “This will also allow us to manage the other players’ time so everyone is ready for their matches on the weekend.”

Boswell and Franklin will join teammate Bill Hamid, a goalkeeper, on the 23-man squad. They will report to Portland following United’s match at Houston on Sunday night.

This marks United’s most all-stars since 2006. Boswell is a second-time selection, Franklin and Hamid are first-timers.

Boswell, 31, has played all but 15 minutes through 20 league matches for United, which is two points behind Sporting Kansas City in the Eastern Conference with two games in hand and on pace for the greatest one-year turnaround in MLS history. Franklin, 29, has started 14 games at right back and missed five matches in May with an ankle injury.

Anchored by Hamid, 23, and Boswell, United (11-5-4) has conceded the third-fewest goals in MLS (20), recorded seven shutouts and allowed multiple goals in one of the past eight matches. During the current four-game winning streak, the club has yielded three goals. Boswell has also contributed a goal and two assists this year. Franklin has one goal and one assist. Hamid is third in MLS in goals against average (1.06) with five shutouts and first in save percentage (75.6).
