In his second appearance since departing Bayern Munich, American Julian Green opened his scoring account for Stuttgart on Monday with a superb one-timer in the 20th minute of a 2-0 victory over Fortuna Duesseldorf. The 2014 World Cup goal-scorer debuted with the second-flight club last week against St. Pauli.

It’s a promising restart for the 21-year-old attacker, who had enjoyed a fine preseason with Bayern but appeared only in two German Cup matches and made the first-team game-day squad for six Bundesliga games. He transferred during the winter window.

Is he under consideration for World Cup qualifying duty next month? Absolutely, if he continues to play regularly and retains quality form. Bruce Arena could use a potent wide player for the qualifiers against Honduras on March 24 in San Jose and at Panama on March 28.

Green scored in consecutive friendlies against Cuba and New Zealand in October but did not feature in subsequent qualifiers against Mexico and Costa Rica.

***Real Salt Lake finalized the acquistion of former academy member Brooks Lennon on a season-long loan from Liverpool. The 19-year-old attacker appeared in 12 U-23 matches, with seven starts and two goals (against Tottenham in September and Everton in October). Lennon is among three players with RSL ties to return to the club this preseason: forward Luis Silva, who struggled to earn minutes at Mexican side Tigres, and midfielder Sebastian Saucedo, whose loan to Mexico’s Veracruz expired after four appearances.

***Other Americans abroad:
