Expectations for Coach Buzz Williams’s first season at Virginia Tech are low, and his initial nonconference schedule reflects that. But there will be no hiding once the Hokies begin league play.
The ACC released its full schedule for the 2014-15 season, and it features an opening slate of conference games that should quickly show Williams just how tough his new job may be. The Hokies could play just two power conferences teams before Jan. 1 – at Penn State as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 3 and at West Virginia on Dec. 30 – but they will start ACC play with a home game against Syracuse and three straight games at Florida State, Louisville and North Carolina.
Among league foes, Virginia Tech will face Virginia, Syracuse, Florida State and Miami home and away this season. Williams will also take the team to the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 25-26, where it will play Northern Iowa and either Miami (Ohio) or Northwestern. Virginia Tech will take on the rest of its nonconference schedule at Cassell Coliseum, starting with its season opener against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Nov. 14.
Since Williams’s hiring in March, Virginia Tech has seen five players leave the program after last season’s 9-22 finish. Williams added two transfers, a junior college recruit and five freshmen to the ranks, but the Hokies will have just nine scholarship players available next year and just one returning player taller than 6-foot-6.
Game times and broadcast information are to be determined unless otherwise noted.
