MTV Movie Awards fashion: Emma Watson, Kerry Washington and more highlights

The red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards can be a bit of a toss up as far as fashion highlights go. As we’ve mentioned in the past, it’s not exactly a bastion of couture.

A few celebrities have mastered the fine line of relaxed-yet-polished–which the event seems to require–while others seem to fall into extremes of outrageous or inappropriate. (Read: see-through.)

Emma Watson is an old pro of proper dressing for award shows with younger audiences. See here, here, here

The Trailblazer Award recipient wore a printed Maxime Simoens dress with structural cut-outs that was beautiful and age-appropriate. And of course the shoes — a lust-worthy pair of Proenza Schouler lace-ups.

Kerry Washington met the challenge, with a fun, orange and black high-low dress by Michael Kors.

Karlie Kloss picked a big trend for the season and executed it flawlessly with a Cushnie Et Ochs cropped-top and high-wasted skirt.

Eddie Redmayne’s AllSaints leather jacket over chambre button-down was a highlight in menswear, while Macklemore’s flashy cape and cobalt blue suit were exactly what we’d expect from the “Thrift Shop” artist.

There were a few guests, however, who took the lax guidelines a little far.

Ke$ha looked as if she ran straight from Coachella to the award show, only stopping to fix her deep berry/black lipstick.

The entire cast of “Jersey Shore” seemed to have mistaken the red carpet for a prom. Though we applaud Vinny Guadagnino and his friend Melanie Iglesias, who despite opting for a plunging neckline, radiated in a white textured gown.

And “Pitch Perfect” star Hana Mae Lee’s cigarette butt topper left many questions: Is this a PSA? Should we all stop smoking for fear of giant ashy headgear?
