‘Veep’ debuts third season: How accurate is the HBO comedy?

Editor's note: An earlier version of this video inaccurately stated the vice president's West Wing office is mostly used for formal events and interviews. The third season of HBO's White House comedy, "VEEP," premieres Sunday, complete with all the laughs and gaffes expected of Vice President Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Now that “Scandal” has officially veered into “completely crazy” territory and “House of Cards” binge-watching has calmed down a bit, it’s time for another political Washington-set show to make its appearance. That would be “Veep,” which kicks off its third season Sunday night on HBO. Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as frazzled vice president Selina Meyer, joined by her ragtag team including chief of staff Amy (Anna Chlumsky) and hapless aide Gary (Tony Hale). Louis-Dreyfus, who has won the Emmy for the role two years in a row, appears to be picking up right where she left off. In the premiere, she attends a book signing for an autobiography while her team attends a staff wedding; expect things not to go as planned. While “Veep” is a comedy, unlike the aforementioned shows, it’s actually known as one of the more accurate depictions of D.C. culture, even capturing the nuances of people obsessively checking their BlackBerry (not iPhone).
