This video will make you want to put down your smartphone

If the dangers of “crossing the street; head in smartphone” isn’t enough to scare you, this video might do the trick.

Writer and director Gary Turk produced what he is calling a “spoken word film for an online generation” that seeks to capture the social isolation that can result from digital connectivity.

We’re all guilty of texting at dinner or in the company of friends, and updating Facebook statuses or Twitter rather than interacting with the people right next to you.

In his film, Turk offers a reminder of what this “online generation” could be missing out on.

“‘Look Up’ is a lesson taught to us through a love story, in a world where we continue to find ways to make it easier for us to connect with one another, but always results in us spending more time alone,” Turk says.

Earlier, my colleague Caitlin Dewey looked at how far our collective smartphone addiction has progressed — and with wearable technology, the worst is yet to come.

Judging by the more than 14 million views, however, Turk’s views seem to be resonating —although I suspect that the video has been shared in millions of Facebook statuses already:
