‘True Detective’ Season 2: Everything we know so far, plus all the rumors

Even though HBO’s hit crime noir “True Detective” is inexplicably categorized as a drama instead of a miniseries at the Emmy Awards, we all know Season 2 is going to be completely different: New cast, new location, new storyline. Although there’s already been many memes created about the possibilities for another lead dynamic duo (now that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have moved on), there has still been no official announcement about what to expect.

Naturally, the silence is driving the people of the Internet crazy. But a few details have leaked out in the last few months, and lately, rumors are heating up about potential stars. So even though everything is shrouded in secrecy at the moment, allow to separate fact and fiction (for now) — from rumors of Vince Vaughn to Brad Pitt:

FACT: Season 2 will take place in California.
Creator Nic Pizzolatto confirmed that the second season will leave Louisiana and head West. Though not Hollywood — “some of the much lesser known venues of California,” he told a public radio program, adding,  — “We’re going to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place.”

FACT: It has something to do with transportation.
Pizzolatto told HitFix that the second season will deal with “hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.” Whatever that means.

FACT: There will be four leads instead of two.
The Daily Beast asked if that meant there would be a woman in a starring role, but Pizzolatto would not confirm.

FACT: The second season is more exciting than the first.
Well, that’s what HBO execs claim, anyway.

RUMOR: Colin Farrell is involved.
Deadline reports the bad boy actor is “deep in negotiations” to join.

RUMOR: Vince Vaughn?
According to E!, the “Wedding Crashers” star is in “preliminary discussions” for a role. Paging Owen Wilson?

RUMOR: Taylor Kitsch might also star.
TheWrap says the “Friday Night Lights” favorite could make a TV comeback.

RUMOR: Brad Pitt! Christian Bale! Joaquin Phoenix!
All names tossed around for Season 2. None of it appears to be true.

RUMOR: Jessica Chastain has a starring role.
This one has been pretty effectively shot down.

FACT: Casting announcements will happen “soon.”
That’s what HBO execs said during the network’s session at the Summer TV Press Tour. Of course, that was three weeks ago.
