We recently found a surefire way of transforming a breezy Washington Post Magazine cover shoot into a bona fide event. First, we called in venerable celebrity/fashion photographer Marc Baptiste to handle the date. Baptiste has been photographing Hollywood A-listers, as well as some of the hottest models in the industry, for as long as we can remember, and the energy that he brings to his work can nearly raise the dead. Next, we added a full dose of plus-size model Candice Huffine in front of the camera. Huffine is the new “it” girl in some current fashion circles, and she’s the subject of our Aug. 16 cover story. Her eye-grabbing work with Italian Vogue and Lane Bryant prompted a wake-up call to anyone who didn’t think that a size-12 figure could hold down an alluring printed page. The sum of this combination was marvelous, as two masters of their games turned it on. The resulting pictures, which also showcased the work of wardrobe stylist Carlton Jones, hit every note that we wanted for our layout. Now that’s really making it work.
