Former Terrapins linebacker Shawn Merriman will hold his annual coat drive before the Maryland football team’s home finale against Florida State on Saturday.

Merriman, who currently plays for the Buffalo BIlls, will be joined by other Terps athletes at all entrances to Byrd Stadium, collecting coats, hats, scarves and other cold-weather clothing.

“We are encouraging Terp Nation to please donate warm clothing items for those affected by Hurricane Sandy,” Merriman said in a news release. “Many families were affected by this devastating storm and we want to do our part to help. I am appreciative of the partnership with the Maryland athletic department, [Department of Transportation Services] and University Relations in this very important campus-wide initiative.”

Since Merriman began the drive 10 years ago, he and his On Lights Foundation have collected more than 20,000 coats for local communities.

At Maryland, Merriman was a first-team all-ACC selection and a first-round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers, with whom he was a three-time All-Pro.
