Terps wrestlers felled by Navy; gymnasts win at Pittsburgh

Your semi-weekly trip around the non-revenue sports at Maryland.


Geoffrey Alexander picked up his third pin in four matches and fifth-ranked Josh Asper knocked off 13th-ranked Mat Miller, but Navy topped Maryland, 22-18, with a win in the final match of a dual meet on Saturday. Jimmy Sheptock remained undefeated in duals this season, while Christian Boley and Shane Gentry also earned wins for the Terps.

Maryland hosts ninth-ranked Virginia Tech on Friday and North Carolina on Sunday Saturday.


The 14th-ranked Terps scored a 195.975, the 10th-highest total in program history, to defeat host Pittsburgh, Cornell and Temple in a quad meet Saturday night. Katy Dodds and Ally Krikorian tied for first on vault to help Maryland total a program-high 49.300 in the event. Krikorian also tied for first on floor and Stephanie Giameo took first on beam. Kathy Tang won the all-around for the second consecutive week, while placing first on bars.

The Terps host North Carolina on Saturday.

Track and field

Senior Moriah Young led Maryland with two individual victories at the annual Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex on Saturday. Young continued her early-season success as she won the weight throw with a mark of 59 feet 10.50 inches.

Amber Melville won for the second straight weekend in the high jump, clearing 5-9.75, and Amina Smith finished third (5-7.25). Sophomore Thea LaFond took first in the long jump (18-7.25) and placed second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.83).


In case you missed it, Maryland soccer players John Stertzer and Taylor Kemp were selected in last week’s MLS draft. Stertzer went 12th to Real Salt Lake, and Kemp was selected by D.C. United with the 17th pick.

Women’s soccer player Becky Kaplan was drafted in the fourth round by Sky Blue FC in the 2013 National Women’s Soccer League draft Friday.

Terp of the Week

Katy Dodds of the gymnastics team is your Terp of the Week. In Maryland’s season opener Jan. 11 at North Carolina State, Dodds tallied a program-record 9.975 on vault, which ranks as the best score in the nation so far this season, and helped the Terps finish with a season-opening-record 195.000 to tie the 19th-ranked Wolfpack. In addition, Dodds received a 10.000 from one of the judges for her vault.


Women’s tennis coach Daria Panova had a succesful debut with a 7-0 victory over Howard on Tuesday at the Tennis Center in College Park.
After spending the first 17 years of his Post career writing and editing, Matt and the printed paper had an amicable divorce in 2014. He's now blogging and editing for the Early Lead and the Post's other Web-based products.
