Pe’Shon Howard reinstated from temporary suspension

Point guard Pe’Shon Howard, who was temporarily suspended by Coach Mark Turgeon before Saturday’s upset against Duke, has been reinstated, Turgeon said during Monday’s ACC coaches teleconference.

Howard did not suit up with the Terrapins at Comcast Center, nor did he sit on the bench. According to Turgeon, he will travel with the team to Boston College for Tuesday’s matchup, and will be available to play.

Turgeon did not elaborate on the details behind Howard’s suspension, only calling it a violation of team rules. Players similarly insisted on keeping the issue in-house.

Last Friday, when Turgeon publicly announced the suspension, he said he would reevaluate Howard’s status on Sunday to determine the suspension’s length.

After a rocky January, Howard appeared to have turned a corner in recent games, stringing together some assertive stretches, including his first three-pointer since North Carolina State and just second in ACC play. Howard is the only player in Maryland’s 10-man rotation to miss a full game this season. He also sat out the Florida State road trip with the flu.

“He’s been punished,” Turgeon said Monday. “We’ll welcome him back with open arms. Hopefully he’s learned from his mistakes, and other players have learned. We need Pe’Shon. We need a mature, confident Pe’Shon moving forward for us to finish strong here.”

More to come from Turgeon’s 2 p.m. availability with reporters, if necessary.
