Sources: Maryland will open next season against Connecticut at Barclays Center

The Maryland men’s basketball team will open next season against Connecticut at  Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 8, according to an individual with knowledge of the negotiations.

Earlier this month, the arena announced a multi-year deal signed with the Terrapins, but neither Maryland’s upcoming opponent nor the date had been finalized. At the time, a person familiar with the situation said the Terps would face a “major-conference” team.

Turns out, that team is the Huskies. Barred from postseason play because of low Academic Progress Rate scores this past season, Connecticut still finished 20-10 (10-8 Big East), including top 50 RPI wins over Syracuse, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Cincinnati. Led by first-year coach Kevin Ollie, the Huskies will, in theory, return every regular from that roster except R.J. Evans, the team’s lone contributing senior.

Since Maryland is scheduled to participate in the Paradise Jam from Nov. 22 to 25 as its in-season tournament, the game against Connecticut will not be part of the larger Barclays Center Classic, in which the Terps lost to Kentucky last November.

The Barclays Classic will take place from Nov. 29-30, featuring St. John’s, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss and Penn State. The Wildcats signed a similar deal as Maryland, and will play Providence on Dec. 1.

Here’s what we know of Maryland’s nonconference schedule so far:

Nov. 8: vs. Connecticut at Barclays Center

Nov. 22-25: Three games at Paradise Jam in U.S. Virgin Islands. The field contains La Salle, Loyola Marymount, Marist, Morgan State, Northern Iowa, Providence and Vanderbilt.

Dec. 8: vs. George Washington at Verizon Center (BB&T Classic)
