Terps WR Stefon Diggs lands on Hornung watch list

The preseason awards haul has already begun for Maryland wide receiver Stefon Diggs, the latest coming Friday morning when the rising sophomore was named to the 2013 Paul Hornung Award watch list, one of six ACC players to earn the honor.

Diggs, just one of four sophomores on the 44-man lost, joins some of the conference’s most electric talents, including Clemson junior wide receiver Sammy Watkins and Miami sophomore running back Duke Johnson.

Last season, Diggs nearly broke Watkins’s freshman all-purpose yardage record despite missing one game, ranking eighth nationally with 172.4 all-purpose yards per game. His 28.5 kickoff return yards per game was also in the top 10 nationwide. Diggs remained consistent at wideout despite the constand upheaval at quarterback too, catching a team-high 54 passea for 848 yards.

The expectations will be immensely high this season for Diggs, Maryland’s clear top option among a loaded receiving corps that, despite losing Marcus Leak for personal reasons, added five-star transfer Deon Long and returns the likes of Nigel King, Levern Jacobs and Tyrek Cheeseboro.

Diggs has already appeared on several Heisman Trophy watch lists, and was named first-team all-ACC — and third-team all-America — on Phil Steele’s preseason team.
