The Maryland football team suffered its first season-ending casualty this week, losing freshman defensive back Milan Collins to an ankle injury.

Collins, a two-way standout at Bishop McNamara, was listed last on the preseason depth chart at strong safety, behind a host of returners. With 19 days remaining until the season opener against Florida International on Aug. 31 at Byrd Stadium, the Terrapins released their first injury report on Monday evening. Ten players are expected to miss the upcoming week with various injuries. Among the notables: wide receiver Deon Long (back), fullback Tyler Cierski (calf) and running back Joe Riddle (head), all of whom missed Friday’s practice, the most recent workout open to the media.

Defensive lineman Andre Monroe (toe) is a new notable addition to the injury list. He is currently backing up Keith Bowers at one of the defensive end spots.

Other injuries are less surprising. Wide receiver Taivon Jacobs and backup long snapper Christian Carpenter each continue to rehab from a torn ACL. Several freshmen — offensive lineman JaJuan Dulaney (knee), defensive lineman Kingsley Opara (shoulder) and inside linebacker Marc Rodriguez (hamstring) — are on the list as well.

Wide receiver Tyrek Cheeseboro, who missed last Monday’s media day because of a death in the family, will be out until Tuesday or Thursday to attend the funeral.
