Two more freshmen Terps lost for the season

Two more freshmen on the Maryland football team will miss the upcoming season with injuries, joining safety Milan Collins, who fractured his ankle in a dormitory on Aug. 9. Offensive lineman JaJuan Dulaney, who announced via Twitter that he underwent knee surgery on Saturday, and walk-on defensive lineman Ty Tucker (knee) are out for the year, according to the latest injury report.

Several new additions, all of whom are out for the final week of preseason practices, provided clarification on existing injuries that Coach Randy Edsall declined to elaborate upon. Defensive lineman Zeke Riser and running back Jacquille Veii, both of whom were spotted at Saturday’s scrimmage using crutches and wearing walking boots, are out with ankle injuries.

Riser, a graduate transfer from Houston, was expected to shore up the defensive line depth but missed practice last week and sat out the scrimmage. Veii, whom Edsall counted among summer’s most impressive performers, began the scrimmage but later retired into the training room.

Wide receivers Amba Etta (shoulder) and Deon Long (back) will also miss the week. Both play the “X” position, which means Levern Jacobs might see more repetitions there this week. Daniel Adams and James Bowman are listed behind Long and Etta on the depth chart, but Edsall said the Terps have worked Jacobs there more in light of Long’s injury, which will hold him out of practice for the second straight week.

With injuries to Veii and running back Joe Riddle (concussion), Maryland suddenly finds itself with a thinned backfield, less than two weeks from the season-opener. Brandon Ross and Albert Reid are still the clear-cut No. 1 and 2 options, but Gilman School graduate Kenneth Goins could see some second-team action this week, much like he did during the scrimmage after Veii went down.

Other injuries include safety Zach Dancel (hamstring), defensive back Alvin Hill (ankle), freshman wide receiver Taivon Jacobs (knee), tight end Brian McMahon (shoulder) and long snapper Christian Carpenter (knee). None of them participated in the scrimmage, wearing shorts and cheering from the sidelines instead.
