Report: Terps get commitment from New York offensive lineman

On Friday, the Maryland football team whiffed on two offensive linemen recruits, when both DeMatha guard Brock Ruble and Florida guard Marcus Applefield spurned the Terrapins to offer their oral commitments elsewhere. Ruble pledged to Florida State in a ceremonial phone call to Coach Jimbo Fisher, while Applefield chose Rutgers. Neither move was entirely unexpected, and Maryland moved quickly to other targets.

Over the weekend, that quick work materialized in a commitment from New York tackle Sean Christie, according to a report from InsideMDSports. Christie, who has not yet been given a star rating by the recruiting Web site, is listed at 6 feet 5 and 280 pounds and attends Patchogue-Medford High on Long Island.

According to one article, Christie didn’t allow a single sack this season. His only other known scholarship offer was to Albany, where coincidentally former Maryland defensive line assistant Greg Gattuso is now the head coach. According to InsideMDSports, Christie committed “an hour and a half” after he received a phone call from Edsall offering him a scholarship.

Christie’s commitment, later confirmed by Terrapin Times, represents the latest example of Coach Randy Edsall’s dedication to the offensive line for his class of 2014. The 14-member class, many of whom are in College Park this weekend on their official visits, currently contains guard Jared Cohen (McDonogh School), tackle Larry Mazyck (Iowa Western Community college), tackle Brendan Moore (Round Rock Westwood in Austin) and tackle Derwin Gray (Fork Union Military Academy). The Terps currently await the decision of local five-star Damian Prince, who will announce on Feb. 14.
