Junior college OL Larry Mazyck signs with Terps, WR Marcus Leak returning

The Maryland football team announced two important additions for the upcoming semester, inking junior college offensive lineman Larry Mazyck and returning wide receiver Marcus Leak from personal leave.

Mazyck, listed at a mammoth 6 feet 7 and 300 pounds, originally committed to the Terrapins in 2010 under former coach Ralph Friedgen, but instead prepped at Fork Union Military Academy and later signed with New Mexico, where current Maryland offensive coordinator Mike Locksley was the head coach. This season, he was named a junior college all-American at Iowa Western Community College, the same school that held over wide receiver Deon Long for a season after Locksley was fired from the Lobos.

Mazyck re-committed to Maryland this August and his letter of intent was processed by the compliance office on Thursday morning. The Reivers were ranked second in the final NJCAA poll and won their second straight Midwest Football Conference championship, with Mazyck earning first-team all-conference honors.

Leak, meanwhile, spent the fall semester back home in Charlotte for personal reasons, watching from afar as fellow wide receivers Long and Stefon Diggs suffered broken legs. He likely would have started this season after catching 23 passes for 393 yards and two touchdowns in 2012, despite missing the final five games with a broken toe.

When Leak announced his departure in late May, he said he intended to return in January, a promise officially fulfilled on Thursday. This means both he and Mazyck will be around for spring football, adding experienced depth to the bowl-bound Terps.

Running back Wes Brown, suspended for one year stemming from an incident with University of Maryland police, remains on track to return for the spring semester as well, after hitting what his lawyer Jason Shapiro described as “benchmarks” planned by the university.
