>> A two-way star in high school, Winfree committed on Sept. 27, 2013, filling Maryland’s lone wide receiver slot for the class of 2014. He reportedly held other offers from Georgia, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State and Vanderbilt, among others. He had visited College Park in 2012 when the Terps got blasted by Georgia Tech, 33-13, unimpressed with the stadium atmosphere and lack of support, but kept Maryland in his mind largely because of his affinity for wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
Then his family visited again this past fall, taking in the 37-0 rout of West Virginia at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, and left convinced it was the right place for Juwann.
“I see the way he carries himself, professionally, he works hard,” Carl Winfree said of Diggs, shortly after his son committed. “I see the way he runs routes, he runs them professionally. He’s looked up to. As long as he doesn’t get hurt, he’s going to the next level. I said: ‘Juwann, this is a guy you’re going to be around. You’re going to learn his habits, and learn the way he does things.’ Then I met Deon Long. Those two wide receivers, they’re going next level. They’re going to be playing on Sundays.”
>> He is ranked among the top 40 receivers nationally and the top 10 players in New Jersey by Yahoo.
