Maryland announces events to celebrate move to Big Ten


Maryland’s athletic department will host a number of events to mark the school’s move into Big Ten on July 1, according to a statement released Wednesday.

The two-day celebration will get underway at noon on June 30 at the Under Armour Brand House store in Baltimore, where Maryland/Big Ten apparel will be unveiled in an even that will be open to the public. Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney, Maryland Athletic Director Kevin Anderson and Terrapins coaches will appear at the apparel launch.

A block party for Maryland and Big Ten alumni, sponsored by the Big Ten Network, will also be held the same day at 4 p.m. at the Fairgrounds adjacent to Nationals Park.

On July 1, the school’s first official day in the conference, an on-campus celebration will be held at Mitchell Field from noon till 1:30 p.m. It is open to the public, and will include giveaways.

“We are eager to celebrate this big moment in our history,” University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh said in the statement. “We have chosen our future, spent a year of intense preparation, and have been welcomed by the Big Ten with exceptional camaraderie. We are academic partners. Now, we cannot wait to meet in competition.”
