Maryland’s Will Likely has been named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list, which is annually awarded to the top defensive back in college football.

With the beginning of fall camp in August inching closer, Likely has already picked up numerous preseason decorations from award committees and publications. Last week, the electrifying defensive back and return specialist was named to the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy watch lists, recognition that cements his place as one of college football’s highly touted players ahead of the 2016 season.

According to a release on Monday, the “Jim Thorpe Award watch list is chosen by a screening committee who compiles a list of 30-50 players.” The list will grow as the season progresses and the award will go to one of three finalists during the Home Depot College Football Awards in December.

Likely is one of 39 players on the preseason list, which can be found here. Other Big Ten cornerbacks include Nebraska’s Nate Gerry, Iowa’s Desmond King and Michigan’s Jourdan Lewis.
