The Fix’s interactive governor’s race map shows GOP opportunity

Republicans have a great chance to expand their stranglehold on governor's mansions this year, with 11 states holding governor's races.

Eight of those seats are held by Democrats, including all of the at-risk states, according to The Fix's handy new interactive map of the governor's races.

According to The Fix's current ratings, one Democratic-held seat (North Carolina) leans toward the GOP, while three (Montana, New Hampshire and Washington) are toss-ups. All four states are open seats with retiring Democratic governors.

Two more seats (Missouri and West Virginia) lean toward Democrats but are potentially competitive.

Meanwhile, all three GOP-held seats up this year — Indiana, North Dakota and Utah — are rated as solidly Republican.

In other words: Democrats have their work cut out for them. It's a very tough map.

Republicans already control 29 of the 50 governorships, and they've got at least a decent chance to win in four states. Which suggests — if all goes just about perfectly — that the GOP could control two-thirds of these seats come January.

Click on the map above for more detail on each state, including demographics, past performance and insight into the two candidates. And click on the tabs at the top of the page for our presidential and Senate race ratings.

(Also stay tuned later this week when The Fix will launch its House race ratings!)
