The farm bill’s failure, as told in 4 pictures

In his story detailing the stunning defeat of the farm bill by the Republican-controlled House, the Post's Paul Kane provides this anecdote: "By the time the gavel fell, [House Agriculture Chairman Frank] Lucas was left in the middle of the floor collecting condolences from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle."

That image struck us.  So we asked our friends at C-SPAN to pull a few screenshots of Lucas on the House floor as it became clear that the farm bill was failing/had failed.  The visuals are telling; here are four.

1. That's Lucas -- bespectacled and with his head bowed on the middle of the picture.

2.  Yes, that's House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) walking away down the center aisle as GOP Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) stands by just above the C-SPAN logo.

3. The aftermath, part I

4. The aftermath, part II
