Ever since the news broke on Monday that The Washington Post had been sold to Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, one of the big questions people have been asking is what his politics look like.
As we documented in a Fix post earlier this week, Bezos gave heavily -- to the tune of $2.5 million -- to an effort to keep gay marriage legal in the state of Washington in 2012 and has, mostly, given personal donations to Democratic candidate.
But, context matters in these things. And now, thanks to an article Adam Bonica, Nolan McCarty, Keith T. Poole, and Howard Rosenthal in the Journal of Economic Perspective we have some of that context.
The chart below shows how the 30 richest Americans who have contributed to political causes gave their money across an ideological spectrum. Bezos's donations, according to the chart, are slightly to the left of the ideological middle -- in similar territory to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and businessman Ron Perelman.
