Three of the last four governors of Virginia have been Democrats. Both U.S. senators from the Commonwealth are Democrats. President Obama carried the state in 2008 and 2012.

There's a case then to be made that Virginia has moved from the swing state that we saw it become in 2008 to one where Democrats start with a slight advantage in a statewide race. The next trust test for Virginia's true political nature? The 2016 presidential election, when it will be a major target for both parties again.

When Terry McAuliffe was elected governor of Virginia Tuesday night, it was the latest indication the state might slightly favor Democrats. (The Washington Post)
